My rat has fleas and we can do? he has had them for a long time!?

my rat has had fleas for a long time. and i do not know what to do. they do not go away very easily. anything to recomend? he has a skin rash i think, and he sqeaks a little bit when i rub the acohol on him. i do not have very much money to bring him to the vet!!! it is 40$$$$.|||First, please stop putting alcohol on him. Its not meant for small animals and can do way more harm than it could ever do good.

Go to the feed store in your town and purchase a tube of horse de-wormer that has 1.87% Ivermectin paste. It generally runs anywhere from $5-$8 on up, depending on the type of de-wormer you get.

When you get home, give your rat a SMALL amount of the de-wormer. When I say small, I mean, no bigger than the size of an uncooked grain of rice. Most rats will think its a treat and take it straight away and then almost make a face as they work on swallowing it.

Repeat this weekly, for about 8 weeks. So, say you give it to him on Saturday, then each Saturday, give him some. This will kill the fleas and any eggs on him.

I would also recommend using some sort of flea powder or bomb in your house to kill the fleas, otherwise, your rat will be free from them while he's on the horse de-wormer and then get them again when he's off it.

If you need to bathe your rat, make it minimal. Rats are clean animals and groom themselves multiple times a day, making a bath almost unnecessary. If you do find it necessary to you to give your rat a bath, use baby shampoo and warm (not hot) water.

Please keep in mind that while rats are small, they too, like cats and dogs, require money, to keep them alive. When they are sick or injured, they need to be seen by the vet, just as a pet cat or dog. Unfortunately, vets normally charge more for rodents than they do for bigger animals. Please think about this before bringing in another animal in the future.|||I can't imagine anything worse than a pet rat with fleas however a dog / cat flea powder or flea collar all purchased at supermarket should do the trick. Definately don't use alcohol. The rash is from scratching and probably the alcohol as well.|||You should be willing to pay $40 for your pet's health. If you can't spend that little money on it, maybe you shouldn't have it. Being a pet owner is about responsibility. The responsible thing to do is take the rat to a vet and get some flea medication.

And PLEASE don't rub chemicals on your pet unless authorized to do so by a professional veterinarian.|||Do you have a cat ?|||AAAAH!! THAT'S SAD :( POOR LITTLE RAT. IF HE HAS FLEAS HE NEEDS TO GO TO THE VET. IF U CANT SPEND MONEY ON HIS HEALTH THEN U SHOULDN'T HAVE A PET. ESPECIALLY IF U RUB ALCOHOL THE POOR ANIMAL...WOULD U PUT ALCOHOL ONE OF UR OPEN WOUNDS??? NO MAMMMES!!!

HOPE HE FEELS BETTER|||Anyway couldn't there be a better solution than putting alcohol on your rat? Look at this link. It says you should bathe your rat with a mild cat or dog flea shampoo and get some powder for the bottom of the cage. Bathing a rat is very easy especially if you pet yours a lot.

how to bathe a rat

http://www.blurtit.com/q400108.html|||oh my god please do not put alcohol on him...i have a very gentle way to cut down on his fleas and help with his skin rash...first of all, you are hurting him by putting alcohol on his dry, rashy skin...i have had many rats and mice as pets..first of all start with his cage..clean it out top to bottom and get rid of any bedding or cloth material in there that can have flea eggs in it..i would start brand new..clean it top to bottom, put in all new bedding, and clean his water and food bowl and put in brand new toys...after this do not put him in until he is clean..next get him and a towel and a bottle of Dawn brand dish washing liquid and take him into your bathroom or kitchen sink for a bath..make the water warm, NOT HOT and gently wet him down while holding him...take a small amount of the dawn and start right behind his ears or on his neck..massage the dawn into his fur while holding him..do NOT put it on his FACE..only on the back of his neck and beyond..start at the neck and work you way to the tail..he should be covered in light bubbles from neck to tail and even on his belly..gently massage his dry skin with the soapy bubbles..make sure to get his tail also...and don't forget those cut little feet and legs..lets review..you got you'r supplies and went to the bathroom, you used warm water and wet him down completely, you applied Dawn dishwashing liquid from his neck down (in that order) and right about now you are holding a soapy, wet rat in your hands..good job..turn off the warm water and massage the bubbles and soap into his skin softly (since you said he has a rash)..this process should take 2 to 4 minutes..by then the fleas will be falling off dead..turn on the warm water and rinse him completely of all soap..take your towel and dry him very well...pick all of the dead and half dead fleas off him and flush them in the toilet..you can use tweeszers if you are having a hard time grabbing the fleas but i just use my fingers to grab them, then wipe them on a paper towel..after you have picked off all that you can see, flush the paper towel and put him in his brand new, clean cage...ot sounds like you must have other pets tho like a dog or a cat...most of the time caged animals don't get fleas because they don't go outside..but your dog or cat goes in the house and out in the back or front yard, bringing in many of these unwanted fleas...so if you want it to be permanent you will need to treat your other pets with some type of flea control or stop taking your rat outside to play in the yard...
